When I started up Alfonzo’s Bowling Challenge, I figured this was going to be a normal bowling game made in the Pic-8 Engine – and dang, I was incorrect.
Alfonzo’s Bowling Challenge has a story, a variety of different challenges, and does not play like any bowling game I’ve ever taken on. Alfonzo himself opens up your bowling lane, but it’s up to you to use the chairs, moving up and down on the left and right side of the screen, to actually hit the pins. You see, you control the ball, which can be moved up the side of the screen using the chairs. Once you are at the top, you can pop off and fall downwards, hitting everything in your path.
After getting a few strikes (it doesn’t matter if you hit the bottom of the screen again) Alfonzo will try to allow you to join the team. This has its own challenges, like hitting eggs with your bowling ball so they hit a pan or getting them into a basketball hoop. Soon, you’ll be playing black jack with your ball and meeting Alfonzo’s friends. Alfonzo’s Bowling Challenge has so much personality, so many different challenges, and is just a well rounded, fun game.
Joining the bowling team is more than just bowling strikes – which you soon learn, before being able to take on a boss and really join. I quite liked learning patience by not scaring away the birds and the role the bowling ball played when being introduced to the Alfonzo’s very talkative brother.
Alfonzo’s Bowling Challenge is playable now on itch.io.
