Before today, the most perilous times I’ve had in Notepad have involved formatting. Now, And yet it hurt offers a challenging journey of revenge within the surprisingly plucky program.
Daniel was enjoying a peaceful existence, unaware that danger could come swoop in and ruin his life at any moment. This being a video game, those peaceful days come crashing down soon after you loaded the game into Notepad, making you wonder just how unlucky you are as a person. How many worlds have I brought to ruin just by starting a game up? Would the code for those places have remained at peace for eternity had I never turned the game on? Why do I ask myself these questions?
Still, with Daniel’s day permanently messed up, you’ll follow him as he seeks revenge for what happened to him. The neat part is that you’ll be doing all of this in Notepad, making changes to the text that will indicate where or what you want to do next. Choose which parent to talk to. Try to buy some stuff. Take a swing at a bat. It’s all done through modifying the game’s text, steadily bringing you closer to the vengeance you seek (but will that revenge bring you any closure?).
And yet it hurt is a sharp game built in an unorthodox way, and is impressive not just for its story and play, but for its presentation. It’s about time I found more action within my typing programs, after all. I’m looking at you, Word.
And yet it hurt is available now (for whatever you wish to pay for it) on itch.io.
