Anodyne, a Zelda-like adventure with a chilling mood, twisting storyline, and surreal world (and the ability to fight with a broom) is now available on PS4 and Xbox One.
Anodyne transports you to a strange land, one that flows from location to location like a dream, offering constant variety and new surprises as you go. You’ll have to use a trusty broom to thump foes and flick dust in their faces (this dust is quite lethal, which has me wondering what’s on the ground here). Your weapon isn’t THAT lethal, though, so expect to have to stay on the move as you fight some creepy foes with a household cleaning tool.
The music is what gives Anodyne its powerful mood and ability to grip the player. There is a haunted beauty to its tracks that load each locale with a subtle menace, making it difficult to feel safe. The story will back that up, winding and unclear as it is, forcing you to look at place, emotion, and feel as you draw your own meanings from the narrative.
Anodyne is a captivating and deceptively frightening adventure, and not playing it is literally inexcusable. Especially with its sequel being in development.
Anodyne is available for various prices for the PS4 and Xbox One (and Itch.io and Steam, too).
