Want to create a gang made up of Robin Hood, Nicola Tesla (wait), Dracula, and Queen Victoria (wait what?) into a scrap against a colossal Cthulhu?
Bookbound Brigade gathers an array of important figures from fiction and history, gives them a cute makeover, and then sends them out in large groups to platform and face down nasty creatures together. Each of these characters has their own abilities and attack styles, but they all act in tandem when you give them a command. If you strike a monster, all of your heroes will take a swing. If you swing from a vine, they all grab on. You get the idea.
Why is everyone teaming up? Turns out the literary world is a bit of a mess at the moment, and everyone has lost their memory. Naturally, their solution is to beat up anything they stumble across, except for each other. Then maybe they’ll find the source of the problem and calm things down in literature land? Maybe? This plan isn’t very well thought out, but at least you’ll probably get to thump some of the characters from books you loved (or hated).
Book Brigade brings together a goofy cast, a silly premise, and an interesting bit of team-based combat to make a charming little Metroidvania. The massive parties made up of classic characters and historical folks makes for some silly stories to tell your buddies later. Fighting Red Riding Hood’s wolfish grandma with a stack of classical fiction people just makes for a good game tale, right?
Bookbound Brigade is available now on the Nintendo Switch, PS4, and Steam.
