Taking place in an alternate Seattle filled with Mermaids, Elves, Orcs, Aliens, and more, Coffee Talk has you sharing in conversations, helping people, and serving relaxing drinks.
Coffee Talk captures that calming openness that comes from sharing a drink with friends and strangers, having you listen as people open up about their lives with a warm mug of coffee in their hands. You might not immediately think you have much in common with a horned devil, but even fantasy creatures need to work, find friends, and cuddle up to someone. Through these fantasy beings and their stories, the developers have touched upon many common problems people battle through every day.
As you’re listening to them, you’ve still got some work to do. You’re the barista, after all. Your job is to concoct drinks to help soothe the people who come into your cafe, crafting something to suit their mood and encourage them to open up. You can also ply your artistic skills at putting some lovely images into the drinks through careful milk pouring. Presentation matters, after all. The drinks also decide where the conversation goes more than your chatting abilities, so do try to serve something nice.
Coffee Talk is a lovely look at how sharing our problems – voicing them aloud – can help us work through them. Through talking with these characters, you can see and feel their problems, sharing in their solving or at least giving the person a foothold to face them. It’s in this listening – in giving someone the space to cast their troubles out into the world and have them be understood – that we can help one another even if all we do is listen. Just listening to someone can give them the space and comfort to find their own solutions and peace, and this game is a beautiful reminder of that simple, but often forgotten, truth.
Coffee Talk is available now on the Nintendo Switch, PS4, Xbox One, and Steam.
