Probably my favorite game of all of EGX, Distinctly Regrettable Eventualities takes you back to the 60’s, having you play as a fancy lady hoping to host the best party and impress everyone she knows.
This is a pretty silly concept to start with, but the way the game evolves and changes adds even more chaos and fun. At first, it’s a simple dinner party – guests are arriving, you must let them in, put out appetizers, move food closer to those who want some, maybe serve some drinks (someone could always use a top up!) These tasks appear at the side of your screen, and if you accomplish them fast, you will have happier guests.
Each time a new guest arrives, you get a beautifully-written description about them before they enter, and all of them are voice acted, so they say lots of stuff as they move about your house. As time goes on, your guests’ requests get more and more absurd. Soon, you are directed to paint the garden or get rid of all the white flowers. This becomes increasingly chaotic, as you must also serve drinks, and who knows where the paint even is? Why am I smashing my own vases? surely I could just pull the flowers out? Often, throwing the vases won’t even break them, so you’ll need to smash them against the wall… anyway…
Suddenly, there are fires and people are too drunk, but you really want to be the head of the town council, so you need to pull yourself together and continue to host the best party anyone could ever attend. This game is just so much fun. The way it stacks and starts to become ridiculous is brilliant. I honestly can’t wait for the game to come out.
Distinctly Regrettable Eventualities is currently in development, but in the meantime, you can follow its creation on Twitter.
