Dunk Lords takes a look at basketball and says: “Yeah, that COULD be fun. But what if it had superpowered players who beat each other down as they played?”
The game is a two-on-two basketball match. Get the ball. Put it in the basket. Straightforward stuff that would no doubt be loved by old James Naismith. The game throws a few curveballs into things to add to the sport just the teensiest bit, though. Like an array of basketball robots, spirits, superpowered people, and sentient fruit that all have special abilities that can get you a few extra points. And courts that cause no end of mayhem with special effects as well.
These basketball stars don’t just use these powers to score points, as they also turn the court into a coliseum of sorts. You can use your powers to pummel your opponents during the match, breaking out in a brawl here and there. It’s all perfectly legal in this game, so if the other team is just making you mad, feel free to just sucker punch someone during the game. Let a big fight break out. Whatever makes you enjoy your time more.
There is a stunning spectacle constantly happening as you play Dunk Lords. Nothing feels ordinary or dull, as dunks come down from the sky like falling comets, or enemies hurl court-clearing laser blasts at one another. It feels a bit like if the gang from Street Fighter 2 decided they would have a pickup basketball game, fireballs and all, adding a colorful chaos to the game. But ol’ Street Fighter didn’t have giant lobsters in it, did it?
Dunk Lords is available now on Steam.
