Little Misfortune, an adventure game from the creators of Fran Bow, now has a free, playable demo to give you a taste of what the full game will be like.
This dark and curious game shows you a mysterious depiction of a fox and a reaper, the fox heading to a seemingly mortal world. There is very little explained at the start, as this isn’t our focus, and is instead foreshadowing.
Que Misfortune, our character within the game. Misfortune is a young girl in a not-so-great family. Clueless as to the unfortunate family that she has been born into, this child feels most of this is normal. A voice, called Mr. Voice, talks to Misfortune, acting as a narrator for the game. This narrator speaks to Misfortune and directly to the ‘player behind the screen’ controlling and making decisions on Misfortune’s behalf.
With Mr. Voice promising eternal happiness, a gift Misfortune thinks is perfect for her mother, we all embark on a strange journey. The demo of Little Misfortune is quite short, but you are able to explore around her bedroom, hallway, kitchen, and backyard. There are a few choices to make, which Mr. Voice explains have consequences, but ready to take on the game, you’ll go forward with them.
Most of this demo sets up the backstory to the small child, as well as foreshadows lots of strangeness and bits of story to come. The creators of this game, KillMonday Games, have a knack for captivating and dark adventure games that I personally fall in love with. Now that I’ve had a taste of Little Misfortune, I look forward to following the rest of her story and finding out exactly what that fox is doing, and if Mr. Voice has her best intentions at heart.
A demo for Little Misfortune is available now on Itch.io or Steam.
