Yellow Rock Road is a minimalistic, 2-button rhythm game that takes you through a very interesting world.
The characters that you meet, hoping that you’ll play for them, have some interesting reasons for a concert. I ended up playing a concert for a bunch of hamsters at a pet shop when I played the demo at EGX 2018.
When it comes to playing music, you get to view a minimalistic screen that has a giant circle with a colored line down the middle, connected to a smaller inner circle. This center circle will slowly fill up with ‘juice’ as you get the rhythm correctly. A raindrop-looking circle will move quickly inside the giant circle, looking to hit that line. If you tap your key as it overlaps the colored line, you will be playing along with the beat.
The raindrop will then bounce off the line, moving back the other way. If you miss the note, the raindrop will continue forward and around. As the levels get more challenging, blocks of color start moving inside the large circle and your raindrop starts disappearing. You need to pay attention to the song and to how fast the drop is moving in order to hit the keys at the right time.
If you start to struggle with this, you can use your juice to make things easier. Your juice can be used at any time to slow down the game, reveal the raindrop, and allow you to see through colored blocks on the screen. With so much help, your juice will drain quickly, and once it is out, you will need to let it fill back up before you can use it once again.
As this is a rhythm game, I should probably tell you that the music is really lovely. I quite enjoyed listening to it.
Yellow Rock Road doesn’t currently have a release date, however, you can follow development by checking out their website and Twitter.
