Mystic Pillars is a mysterious puzzle game full of secrets and story, having you help a cobbler arrange pillars so that water flows to a city.
In this game, you are exploring Zampi Kingdom, which was once successful but now is destroyed, deserted, and filled with lots of pillars. The gameplay itself is based on the board game Mancala, where you must move gems around pillars, trying to get the correct amount of gems on each desired pillar. There are different configurations of the gems that lead to different stories, so you’ll want to complete all of these gem-shifting puzzles if you want to know the full tale of what happened to this place.
The story itself is shown through cutscenes in between the different levels, dividing the gameplay and the scenes to incorporate the story. This was probably my least favorite aspect of the game when I tried it out at the Big Indie Pitch Digital event, as the cutscenes, to me, seemed to be in a completely different art style then the main game, making it feel like two separate games mashed together.
I found that Mystic Pillars was relaxing and became very challenging, providing an interesting take on Mancala as I worked to get my gems into the right places. The music and visuals for the main game are so polished and well done, and the story itself is interesting, especially as you dig deeper into the reason this kingdom has fallen.
Mystic Pillars is available now on the App Store, Google Play, and Steam.
