Only Shadows is a first-person exploration game that keeps you wondering at its narrative as you delve into memories distorted by warfare.
In Only Shadows, you are moving forward, exploring a world of broken paths that have come from conflict and war. Diving deep into a mind that is constantly shifting, you need to experience the impact that war is having on an individual mind. Through what seems like flashbacks, you are taken back to broken environments to see what damage was caused.
There are various puzzles that appear in Only Shadows, none of which are straightforward. From remembering symbols in a large conference room to trying to figure out what is going on in a town full of colorful houses, you’ll always be wondering what is going to happen next.
Only Shadow has an air of mystery around each and every scene, as they may not connect perfectly together and are just meant to be bits of one’s mind. Going through seemingly-safe memories, like walking down a beautiful path through the woods, quickly falls away as you melt through the floor.
Words and bits of story appear in some of these flashbacks, giving you more context and more of an idea as to what is going on, but ultimately, it’s up to you to interpret these memories and find your way around them. The entire time I played Only Shadow at EGX 2018, I had an unsettling feeling in the pit of my stomach as I explored these strange worlds.
Only Shadows does not have a release date yet, but you can keep up to date with development by following them on Twitter or checking out their website.
