Onryo | 怨霊 has you cleansing a haunted house in Japan. Naturally, you do this by taking pictures of ghosts, as we all know that ghosts despise having their pictures taken.
Why do ghosts hate picture day? While there are far more sensible reasons behind it, I feel it’s because they can’t change their clothes. Plus they tend to have those bags under their eyes, or are bloated from water, or have their necks kind of off-kilter. They’re just not terribly flattering pictures, that’s all. I hate it when my hair’s a bit dirty, but these folks are covered in scars and rope burns and all kinds of things that just make you frown when you’re flipping through your photo feed. Which is probably why they want to kill you for taking a picture.
ANYWAY, you’re supposed to be cleansing a haunted house using a special camera. So, basically you have to break into someone’s house and take bad pictures of them. The ghosts are rightfully angry, and will show more than a bit of hostility as you stumble through the house snapping damaging pictures of them. Expect for them to make you jump a few times, as talented horror developers Chilla’s Art (the folks behind another terror-inducing game we liked, Stigmatized Property | 事故物件) are behind this Fatal Frame-inspired game.
Onryo | 怨霊 offers an hour or two of puzzles, photography practice, and screaming lessons, depending on whether you can focus while being chased by undead spirits or not. I tend to scream and run, which often inflates my play time. Hopefully you can handle phantom hands grabbing at your limbs better than I can.
Onryo | 怨霊 is available now on Steam.
OMG Zero / Fatal Frame series is (was? 🙁 ) my favorite survival horror series, because it was not only creepy but also offered real gameplay with accurate and timed shots. Thanks for highlighting this one. Gotta check it out!
Same! I am replaying the games now on stream and am reminded just how good Fatal Frame is. Very excited to see other developers are carrying on its spirit so I can hunt more ghosts with cameras!
