What exactly goes into making a spaceship into a cozy home? Teamwork, if ridiculous multiplayer homemaking game Out of Space is to be believed.
In this new game from the developers of Chroma Squad, you and a few local or online pals are cast adrift in a starship floating through space, and while it’s functional, it’s not exactly a comfy living space. As such, you and your crew need to turn this procedurally-generated ship into a livable space by recycling alien fluids, finding resources, and keeping the whole place as tidy as you can. It’s a lot of work, but if you all come together, you should be able to pull it off.
That teamwork is a key element, as you will need to get a lot of different stuff going in a hurry, and each person can lighten the load a lot if they can take their own task. It doesn’t do you any good to have the ship fueled if no one decides to cook supper, right? You and the other players all need to take some time to discuss what you’re going to do so that people aren’t tripping over each other to complete the same tasks. There’s is a lot that has to be done to finish the game’s harder matches, and communication will be critical at these times.
Still, Out of Space can also be played in less stressful matches that allow for a little bit of silliness and mistakes, as I saw in the PAX East demo I tried out. When someone is scrambling to mop up alien goo, folks are struggling to grow pumpkins, and furniture is accidentally getting tossed out into space, it can make for a ridiculously good time. There’s room to really optimize how you play at the same time, though, creating a unique mixture of silly co-op game and a serious game of strategy that offers a lot to do no matter what you want from it.
Out of Space is available now on Steam Early Access.
I’m really looking forward to this game.
