Guess who just got stuck in a city of the Old Gods? Surely there’s not much danger there, right? At least you’ll have a supernatural pal to help you out in OUTBUDDIES.
Normally, these journeys through strange, hostile places are pretty lonely for folks like Nikolay and his undersea suit and firearm. However, a grinning, floating creature has decided to be your new bestie in this game, helping you out while keeping you company. While you can shoot monsters with a clever array of guns, your pal can scan the environment safely, lift objects telepathically, and carry out all sorts of helpful tasks. A great pal to have when all of these quivering, nasty beasts are about.
Your weapons can be quite sharp, too. A big example of the thought that went into them was a smart shot I got to try out while playing the demo at PAX East. When fired, this blast will slide across platforms that you hit, doing damage to those platform-crawling creatures you always see in these kinds of games. Nice touch that cut down on hopping and aiming, and one of many clever ideas at work in the game.
This city is definitely a gloomy place, filled with creatures and places that all feel oppressive and “off.” It exuded menace, feeling like somewhere you probably shouldn’t be poking around in. Still, you’re here and need to survive, so go grab your little pal (in co-op play, if you prefer) and try to find the way back to safety.
OUTBUDDIES is available now on Steam. It is slated to release on the Nintendo Switch, PS4, and Xbox One some time this year.
