Recompile takes you into the action by becoming a virus inside The Mainframe, setting off buttons, destroying strange creatures, and watching the glitchy world build around you.
In this action platformer, you start off with not many abilities as you explore a large area that continues to build while you walk around. You are malicious code called the Program looking to stop yourself from being deleted, so you will need to explore, triggering buttons that will light up the floor below you. These buttons might act as timers or need to connect with others before revealing areas of light.
Light orbs can be collected, to gain better abilities as malicious code. Soon, you can jump higher, dash around, and fly through the air. As you explore with your new powers and are able to see more of the world, bits of glitchy environment appear around you, adding to this digital place.
This environment isn’t all that it seems, either, as almost-adorable monsters appear from within the floor, awakened by the world around them, looking to eliminate you. Using your gun or dash ability, you can take them out so they are no longer a problem.
Recompile has a lot of depth in it’s concept and story, looking to show how the first sentient AI was born, changing the world forever. I was able to take a look at a vertical slice of this game at Game Anglia, and what I saw so far is challenging, great to look at, and very nice to explore.
