Keeping your attacking pods in the right place is a big part of Rigid Force Redux, but so is weaving through tightly-packed foes to collect crystals that let you unleash powerful blasts.
The game, which is an advanced version of the PC release of Rigid Force Alpha, casts players out into space with a starship that may seem a bit familiar for fans of R-Type. With it, you’ll be cutting down enemy ships with a variety of lasers and bursts of shots, aiming to clear a path through everyone causing shenanigans in the galaxy. Just expect a whole lot of gunfire to make its way back to you.
You have a few handy gadgets to help you cross these dangerous star fields. You have movable pods that you can position around your ship to guide your shots, allowing you to shoot in front, above, below, or behind, meaning you won’t find yourself stuck when something creeps up from the back. While these shots do decent damage, you can charge up a more powerful beam by grabbing crystals that drop from fallen enemy ships. Your ship will fire at full power until that bar is empty once you use it, so make sure you choose the right time to cut loose.
Having gotten my hands on Rigid Force Redux at PAX East, I can verify just how good it feels to fire off that high-powered blast at a colossal ship, only just defeating it before it made impact with me, as well as the kind of high you can only get from shooting something behind you in a shmup. No more sneaking up on me in this one, space jerks!
Rigid Force Redux is slated for release on the Nintendo Switch and Xbox One in Q2 of this year.
