Hearth is a very challenging survival game that puts you in a harsh winter, with only a yurt to live in.
You don’t have much survival equipment in this barren world filled with snow. Your home contains a bed as well as a fire pit to keep you warm. You are able to go outside this yurt to collect resources to help you survive. Resources come in many forms in Hearth – spider legs, logs, twigs, rotten crops – and all of these can be collected and used in crafting as well as burning to stay warm.
Your warmth is your health. You will need to continue to gather items that will be sacrificed to the fire in order to stay warm. If your fire is roaring, you will get a crafting menu where you can create tools and food. This menu comes with a recipe note, showing you what you need for each item.
Crafting will create items that not only burn for longer, but also can help you survive. One item, a food you can create, opens up more slots in your inventory. An axe, which you can also make, will give you a weapon against the strange spiders that lurk in the night.
The days in this land aren’t always clear for you to walk around and find burnable items, either. Sometimes, there are blizzards of blowing snow, and you won’t be able to see or move around much without getting caught. These are the days that you should sleep so as to not get cold and waste your heat. Just be sure your fire is burning bright beforehand.
Slowly, the world will look more barren as you are forced to burn what is around. The snow is thick and never-ending, so you will need to be very careful of what you are doing. See how long you can survive in this very harsh world.
You can play Hearth (which is still in development) for free on Itch.io.
Terrific review! Hearth looks very interesting. The teaser atmosphere is fantastic. I did not dare blink. I’ll play Hearth on my next spare time!
