A women accused of being a witch is burned at the stake, and isn’t being properly buried. In The Maiden, you play the ghost of this women, stuck traveling around the world she use to live in.
Now a ghost with witch-esque powers, you must wander around the pagan Hell, hoping to someday be set free. Still, even these abilities won’t make your journey through this Otherworld very easy.
This platformer sees you exploring around and gaining spells to help you explore further into this new world. While it may look like a familiar place, this world is filled with strange monsters that don’t like you around.
You will need to use your spells to fight back, run, and escape all of the dangers in whatever version of Hell you are currently trapped within. These creatures are drawn from Finno-Ugric mythology, which is sprinkled all through The Maiden.
I got a chance to check out The Maiden at the Big Indie Pitch at GDC, earlier this year. The visuals really stuck with me – there is a sort of hand drawn look and strangeness that comes with the monsters that you need to face. These monsters come from a mythology that I am not familiar with, adding an extra interesting layer to the game.
Blind Fox Studios is looking to release The Maiden in 2020. You can find more information about the game on their website.
