Collecting coins in platformers is all fun and games until the world around you needs to be twirled, wound, and turned in order to find them.
Mobius does an amazing job of bringing puzzling dimension to flat platformers while creating a challenging experience.
Mobius sees you trying to collect coins before moving onto the next level. At first, it seems like a pretty straightforward platformer, apart from being shaped like a circle. There’s a bit of jumping, avoiding spikes, and making it to a door that only unlocks once you have collected the set amount of coins. Soon, keys are added, which work how you’d imagine. Anytime you die within the game, you will restart at the beginning of that level. All very normal stuff.
After a bit of basic gameplay, you end up being instructed to click and move the world around, showing that the circle you’ve been working around is suddenly twisted, with more of an area around the other side. Then comes the ability to shrink the level. All of these powers let you twist and reshape the level, altering hazards to make them easier to avoid, or bringing coins somewhere you can grab them.
These additions to a basic platformer take it to the next level, bringing a pretty unique experience to what was originally a simple coin collecting game. The levels are challenging as you move the circle around and stretch the platforms to make spike pits much tinier and more manageable. With these level-changing abilities (and a challenging boss in the demo where you cannot fix any of your mistakes), Mobius is a wonderful way to spend your time.
