School can be tough, and sometimes the only thing that gets you through each class is the idea of your after school club meeting up and doing something fun! Like a high-stakes snowball fight, perhaps?
In Wintermoor Tactics Club, Alicia is just enjoying her day-to-day life at a very prestigious school, until suddenly, a big announcement is made.
There are a lot of clubs at Wintermoor, but Alicia is a part of the Tactics Club – a club that makes character sheets and plays turn-based tabletop games. There are so many other clubs though – ones for cooking and various sports. Suddenly, the school assembles and the headmaster makes an announcement; he will be banning all clubs.
Instead of having these various clubs, there will be a huge snowball tournament that will decide what club will stay active at the school, and only one club can win. Luckily, the Wintermoor Tactics Club has been training for something like this. You see, this snowball tournament is played just like the tactics club: turn based, with each player taking a turn to attack before retiring and letting the other team fight.
You can practice for the snowball fight on the tactics board, diving into a world where you play as heroes and enemies with swords. Your club members are a range of misfits, who don’t really fit in anywhere else in the school, but in tactics, they get to be the heroes of their dreams. They’ll just need to become the kind of hero that wins a school snowball fight.
Apart from the levels, which are turn-based and played within the club or snowball fight, Wintermoor Tactics Club also plays much like a visual novel with many story elements. You can navigate your way around the school, speak to various other people, and visit a map of the world. It’s not just tactics – there is much more story to be discovered.
I took a look at Wintermoor Tactics Club at GDC recently and enjoyed my time with it. The story and general vibe of the game is very good, even if you’re not the biggest fan of turn-based strategy games.
Wintermoor Tactics Club is currently in development, but in the meantime, you can add it to your Steam Wishlist.
