Xenogunner is a run and gun game that knows what you want: wild, memorable setpiece boss battles against monstrous sugar cubes and other huge meanies.
Zeta, kind king of the Xenolians, up and gets dethroned by a tyrant called the Xenogunner. This particular tyrant has all kinds of nasty powers through Xenonature, and while you;re not one to show off, you’re just as capable with that power as they are. So, since ol’ Xeno G is being such a jerk, you’re going to have to beat it at its own game. You didn’t want to have to do this, but you;re going to have to bust it up. It AND its array of massive enemy bosses.
This is the big focus of the game: boss battles. I can’t blame them, as every memorable moment I’ve had in Contra or Metal Slug has involved the colossal, damage-devouring machines and monsters that have stood between me and the end of each stage. This game is pretty playful with its creatures (like the above sugar beast), but these monsters don’t mess around, forcing you to dash and leap around their varied powers as you blast away. Being able to freely aim makes shooting back pretty straightforward, thankfully.
Xenogunner aims to be welcoming with its various customizable difficulty settings, seeking to let many players challenge themselves how they see fit (or just tear through the bosses to feel powerful or blow off steam). It’s a distillation of my favorite aspect of the genre, and a welcome bit of wild action.
Xenogunner is available now on Steam.
